Outreach Initiatives

CIAN is committed to creating and carrying out CIAN-wide pre-college outreach programs that entice the youth of today to study the scientific fields needed for photonics research and careers and tackles the challenges often involved in attracting students to STEM-related fields.

STEM subjects are arguably the most important, and at the same time, most difficult to teach children. According to a 2011 STEM Smart Brief, science teaching time has decreased, with 28% of the school districts across the nation spending an average of only 178 minutes per week on science instruction, compared to 323 minutes per week on math and 503 minutes per week on reading. Teachers must teach science early and must teach it often. CIAN has focused much of its efforts on augmenting classroom science curriculum at both the pre- and post-secondary education levels.

Animations

CIAN has created interactive animations about a variety of topics including Snell's Law, the electromagnetic spectrum, total internal reflection, temporal dispersion, and more. These may be used in or out of the classroom to encourage student understanding of difficult topics related to optics and CIAN research. Find a list of all CIAN animations and links to them on the Photonics Hub "Additional Resources."
